Audrey, a life long friend to my Aunt Anne and honorary Aunt to my sister and I passed away this past weekend. I have so many memories from my childhood that all include her. She was such a big part of our family, maybe not through blood, but through our hearts. Audrey (like her Mother and my paternal Grandmother) suffered with Alzheimer's disease. When she was diagnosed, she was aware that she had it and took meds to slow it's progression down. She eventually got worse and my Aunt (they were roommates for 45 years, neither ever got married) had to place her in a nursing facility. Last time I saw her was over 2.5 years ago, right after Cindy and Fred's wedding. She didn't know us and at times called Aunt Anne "Mom". It is such a sad disease. Anyway, she was found sitting on the floor in another patient's room, they think she had fallen. She was suffering some paralysis on one side of her body, she was found to have a bleed in her brain. My Aunt and Audrey's niece had to decide whether to do surgery (on her already sick brain) to re- leave the bleed or let her be and slowly over the next days or weeks she'd pass away. They decided to try and help her. After her first surgery she needed another more involved surgery. Basically she never regained consciousness after this surgery and my Aunt stayed by her side through the days she had left.
We have missed being with her these past few years, but now with her passing it makes it all so final and so sad.
Audrey was a great person! She will be missed. We love you, Audrey!
I pray my Aunt can muster the strength to move along in time, it was so hard for her and all of us to loose my Grandmother to this awful disease and now her best friend. I pray for her!
On Saturday we all got together for our annual holiday baking and made a bunch of cookies, one of them, a tradition for us every year, Audrey's stained glass cookies. We always think of her when we make them and will every time we eat them as well.
God Bless!
